Everything You Need to Know About Gas Spit Rotisseries

Do you love roasted chicken? What about a juicy, delicious pork belly? If so, a gas rotisserie is the BBQ for you! A gas spit rotisserie is a great way to cook up your favourite meats with ease. We are proud to offer the only licensed AGA-approved gas spit roaster in Australia.

What is a gas spit rotisserie?

A gas spit rotisserie is a type of rotisserie BBQ in which meat or vegetables is placed on a metal skewer that is rotated slowly over a heat source. This type of cooking method results in evenly cooked, juicy, and flavorful meat. The fat renders out of the meat and self bastes over the surface of the rotating meat that helping to keep the outside of the meat from drying out. The meat is cooked with gas as a primary heat source compared to the traditional charcoal rotisseries. This is a cleaner cook however the meat will not have that authentic smokey flavour through it.

What are the benefits of using a gas spit rotisserie?

There are many benefits to using a gas rotisserie such as:

  • It is a great way to cook evenly cooked, juicy, and flavorful meat that self-marinades as it rotates.
  • It helps to keep the outside of the meat from drying out.
  • At the time of writing this, gas rotisserie can still currently be used on total fire ban days in Australia where solid fuel such as charcoal can’t be used.
  • It is an easy way to cook a lot of meat and entertain guests or large groups of people.
  • They can be used undercover without smoking out, you, your guests and your house.
  • You don't need to maintain your fire, Just skewer the meat, light the gas and walk away.

How do I choose the right gas spit rotisserie for my needs?

When choosing a gas spit roaster, there are a few things you should keep in mind. First of all and most importantly is to make sure the spit has a lid and is fully enclosed. Gas is not as hot as charcoal so an open gas spit roster will not cook that well. Next, you need to consider the size of your unit. Currently, we have 2 great gas spit roasters for sale in our range. The Dual Fuel 1000mm is perfect for smaller cuts of meat or Gyros and the Dual Fuel 1500mm can accommodate your full animals like lambs and pigs. When you know what you will be cooking, ensure to pick the spit that caters for those needs. Next, you need to consider if you ever want to try using charcoal to experience that mouthwatering smokey flavour you will only ever get from a charcoal rotisserie, if so then you need to make sure you purchase a dual fuel, charcoal and gas spit roaster. Finally, please make sure your gas rotisserie is AGA tested and approved, you don't want your spit to turn into a gas bomb if it hasn't been built with all the safety switches.

Choose the unit that has the features that are most important to you.

Gas Spit Rotisseries FAQ

Both our Flaming Coals SPG 1000 & 1500 can use gas or charcoal however they work independently and cannot be used together.

While it’s not essential to use a counterbalance weight, we HIGHLY recommend you do. Consider it an insurance policy on the health and longevity of your motor. A counter balance weight will stop the ‘flopping’ of the heavy side of the animal when spit roasting to ensure you have evenly cooked meat.

Yes - the Flaming Coals Gas spit rotisseries are compatible with your standard LPG gas bottle.

Charcoal will be much hotter than gas when cooking on your gas spit rotisserie. That is why it is important to purchase a gas spit roaster that has a hood to keep the heat in and around the meat you are cooking.

Yes - you absolutely will. The advantage of having a hood and cooking will be a huge reduction in fuel consumption and reduction of your cook times. As mentioned above, gas does not get as hot as charcoal in a spit so it is important to have a hood that you can close to keep the heat in.

The type of rotisserie accessories you need depends on what you are planning to cook. For full animals like lambs or pigs, we recommend a lamb prong pack that includes two large prongs, a back brace, a set of leg braces and a counterbalance weight. However, for smaller cuts of meat and chickens, a set of chicken prongs will suffice. If you want to make gyros, we highly recommend seasoning with yiros seasoning and using gyros discs as this will be much easier to carve against. Spit Roast Baskets are also another hugely important accessory that really opens up a lot of possibilities. They allow you to spit roast anything that can’t be put on a skewer, like fish, vegetables, pork belly etc.

Our SPG1000 comes with a silent 10kg which is perfect for all your cuts of meat, gyros, vegetables and so much more. You can also upgrade your SPG1000 to the deluxe model which comes standard with a 22mm skewer and a 30kg motor, which is perfect for people who need a little more flexibility.

Our SPG 1500 comes standard with a 30kg motor, which in most cases will be 100% sufficient. However, if you are looking to spit roast really large animals we also have options for 60 or 100kg motors. The choice is totally up to you.
